MAWU wins NYC Dance Awards 'Crew of the Year' for 2016!

December 18, 2016

December 2016

MAWU received the NYC Dance Awards 'Crew of the Year' award for 2016! We are humbled and honored. Thank you so much to Melanie and Glyde and the whole crew at Rep Your Styles and Clap It for organizing such an awesome event. To see styles like flexing, lite feet, vogue and hip hop showcased and represented tonight at such a high level was mind blowing and inspiring. To everyone that voted for us, thank you thank you thank you! We are so appreciative of the support that we get from this community and will keep doing our part to rep for women, to rep for the house community, to support the culture, and to inspire the next generation through positivity, both on and off the dance floor. These are crazy times right now, that remind us just how important it is for us to embrace our diversity, to embrace our connections, and to influence change through our art. Shout out to all the nominees and to all the crews out there who are doing big things. And to all our elders who opened doors for us and paved the way for us to do what we love... we thank you.

MAWU to Begin CUNY Dance Initiative Residency in Fall 2016

November 04, 2016

October/November 2016

This fall, we are super excited to begin a 4-week residency at Hostos Community College in the Bronx. We will present our latest work 'A Journey into House' dedicated to our friend and mentor, the late Marjory Smarth. Marjory was an iconic figure in the New York underground house scene and passed away in 2015. She was a warrior in life, a pioneer in dance, and she touched many lives around the world while spreading her message of love: Live True, Dance Free. This work is a celebration of her life and a reflection on her legacy on what would have been her 47th birthday. Followed by a post-show Q&A and party featuring DJ Sabine!
